The purl stitch is basically the knit stitch, only the needle goes in front of the needle in your left hand rather than in back. To do stockinette stitch, you knit one row, purl one row, knit one row, purl one row, and the smooth side will face outward, such as in a sweater or a doll. Reverse stockinette is purl one row, knit one row, and if you flip it over it should look exactly the same as the regular stockinette stitch. However, with reverse stockinette the bumpy side is facing out instead of the smooth side.
