Using 2 strands of main color, cast on 36 stitches. Work Garter Stitch to approx. 18" from beginning. Flap: Bind off 10 stitches, and with 1 stitch on needle, knit the next 15 stitches, bind off remaining 10 stitches; turn. Next Row (Place marker in center of work to identify right side): Join contrasting color and knit across. Continue in Garter stitch on 12 stitches for 4", ending right side. Next Row: Knit 2 together, knit to the last 2 stitches, knit 2 together. *Next Row: Knit across. Next Row: Knit 2 together, knit to last 2 stitches, knit 2 together. ** Repeawt from * to ** again - 10 stitches. Next Row: Knit 2 together, bind off to last 2 stitches, knit 2 together and fasten off. FINISHING: With right sides together fold backpack in half lengthwise and sew side seams, beginning at top of backpack. Weave loose ends into wrong side of work. Turn right side out. Shoulder Strap: Cut 6 blue and 6 green - 72" lengths of yarn. With 12 lengths of yarn together, make a double knot at one end, 1.5" from end. Divide into 3 groups of 4 and braid to other end. Thread unknotted end through safety pin or yarn needle and thread through stitches of backpack. Begin at the lower right hand corner of back, threading from front through both sides of backpack and pulling through to back. Leave excess for strap, and thread through the upper right hand corner about five inches from edge and only through one side of backpack. Thread back, from inside to back to the left of the previous stitch, and pull tight, although not tight enough that the material cinches. Flip backpack over, pulling yarn around side of backpack. The yarn should now be wrapped around the left side of the front of backpack. Fold the flap down, and poke the yarn through on the other side of flap, leaving a strap for the flap to fold into, sealing the backpack shut. Poke the yarn through only one half of the backpack, and the come back through front, mirroring opposite. Wrap around side again, and flip backpack over. Poke into one half of backpack, and then come out again, creating a stitch. Poke through both halves of backpack in the lower left hand corner, and tie a knot, leaving a loop for shoulder. Adjust lengths of shoulder straps to be equal, and trim the ends of strap.
