Garter Stitch Doll

The Garter Stitch Doll is made in two parts. The two parts are identical to each other, and they are sewn together to make the completed doll. For 1 doll, you will need about 175 yards of yarn. You should also use a pair of 14 inch long size 8 knitting needles. Starting with the first leg, cast on 10 stitches. Work in garter stitch until the legs measure 5 inches. Without tying a knot or binding off the stitches, slide the stitches off the needle onto a spare set of needles, spare crochet hook, piece of wood, or anywhere that the stitches won't slide off. Cut the yarn so that there is a tail of about 4 inches. Then, cast on 10 stitches onto the same needles that you made the other leg with. Knit in garter stitch until the piece measures exactly the same as the other leg. This time, though, don't slide the stitches onto another needle. Slide the other leg back onto the left needle, with the tail hanging closer to the pointed edge of your needle. Knit the two pieces together by knitting a row across all 20 stitches. Keep knitting in garter stitch until the piece measures 4 inches from where you joined the two legs together. At the edge of the work, cast on 12 more stitches, and knit across all of the 32 stitches. Once you finish that row, cast on 12 more stitches at the edge of the piece. Knit across all 44 stitches. These extra cast-ons form the arms.Work in garter stitch until the arms measure about 2 1/2 inches, then bind off 17 stitches. You should now have 27 stitches left on the needle. Knit to the end of the row, then bind off 17 stitches again. Knit to the end of the row. To make the head, knit in garter stitch for eight rows, increasing one(by knitting into the stitch twice) each time. After this step, you should have 18 stitches on your needle. Now do the opposite, knitting eight rows, except this time decreasing once each row by knitting into the stitch twice. Bind off, then repeat to form the other side. When you're finished, sew on the buttons for the eyes, and embroider the nose. When you're done, sew the two sides together, starting at where the head meets the neck and finishing at the opposite side. Stuff the doll, then sew the head shut, tie off and cut the extra yarn. This whole project will take about 175 yards of yarn per doll.
