The Curly Edge Pullover can come in 4 sizes, with the smallest on the outside and changes for larger sizes in parenthesis. The sizes are Children's 8(10, 12, 14). The finished measurements for the chest at underarm: 37(40, 43, 46) inches. The finished measurements for the length from shoulder: 21(23, 25, 26) inches. The finished measurements for the sleeve length: 14( 15, 16, 17) inches. For this project, you will need 875 (1000, 1125, 1250) yards of yarn for a solid colored sweater. You will also need a pair of size 8 and a pair of size 10 1/2 needles. If you are making a sweater with stripes in 3 or more colors, you should buy about 125 yards extra of each. This sweater will take a long time (it took me about 3 months) so be sure that you have no other projects that are more urgent. To make the back: With smaller needles (about 2 1/2-3 sizes smaller than your larger ones) cast on 65(71, 75, 81) stitches. Work in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row, repeat)) for 2 inches. Change to the larger needles and continue in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 21 (23, 25, 26) inches. Measure with the edge curled about 2 inches-don't pull it flat to measure it. Bind off 19 (22, 24, 27) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Place the remaining stitches on a holder. To make the front: Work as for the back until the piece measures 18 1/2 (20 1/2, 22 1/2, 23 1/2) inches, ending after you have completed a wrong-side (purl) row. Measure with the edge curled as for the back of the sweater. In the next row, knit 25 (28, 30, 33) stitches, place the remaining stitches on a holder, and purl back on the stitches that are not on the holder. Shape the left neck edge as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit until 3 stitches remain, decrease 1 by knitting 2 together, then knit 1. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl all stitches. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until 12 (22, 24, 27) stitches remain. Work back anf orth on these stitches until the front is the same as the back in length. Bind off all stitches on the right side. Place the center 15 stitches on a holder. Place the remaining 25 (28, 30, 33) stitches onto the needle. Join yarn and knit 1 row on the right side, turn, and purl back. Shape the right neck edge as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over to decrease. Knit to the end of the row. ROW 2 (wrong side):Purl all stitches. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until 19 (22, 24, 27) stitches remain. Work back and forth on these stitches until the front is the same as the back in length. Bind off all stitches on the right side. To make the sleeves: With the smaller needles, cast on 24 (28, 31, 35) stitches. Work in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row, repeat) for 2 inches. Change to the larger needles and continue in stockinette stitch, increasing 1 stitch from 1 edge, and 2 stitches from the other edge on the 1st and every following 4th (4th, 6th, 6th) row until you have 52 (56, 59, 63) stitches. Continue until the sleeve measures 14 (15, 16, 17) inches or the length you want it to be. Be sure to measure with the edge curled about an inch. Bind off all stitches. Make a second sleeve to match the first one. To finish the piece: Sew together the shoulder seams. Measure down 7 1/2 (8, 8 1/2, 9) inches down from the shoulder seam on the front and back and run an approximately 6 inch piece of yarn through the edge of the knitted fabric at that point. This yarn will act as a marker and should be removed once you sew the sleeves to the body. Sew the sleeves to the body between the markers, matching the center of the sleeve to the shoulder seam. ew the side and sleve seams. To make the collar: With a circular needle (or double pointed needles) pick up 11 stitches along the left front; slip the 15 stitches from the holder at the center front onto the needle, pick up 11 stitches from the front right, then slip the 27 stitches from the back neck holder onto the needle. You should now have a total of 64 stitches on your needle (on double- pointed needles, there should be 4 or 5 needles on which the stitches are divided). Working in the round, knit until the collar measures 3 inches or your desired length. Bind off loosely, and allow the collar to roll.
