Crazy Caterpillar
In order to make this project, you will need one pair of knitting needles (size 8), and one skein of each of four different colors(the yardage of yarn for the project is 35 yards for each of 4 colors). You can always use different colors, one color, or two colors - one color for the sections and another for the rings. You will also need a yarn needle, a regular needle, two buttons for the eyes, and some stuffing. This pattern is made with the first color (1st segment) as gold, the second (rings) as black, the third (2nd segment) as pink, and the fourth (3rd segment) as purple.
With the gold, cast on 6 stitches. Purl one row. Knit one row, increasing by knitting into each stitch twice so that you end up with 12 stitches. Purl one row. Knit one row, again knitting into each stitch twice to end up with 24 stitches. Purl one row. Knit one more row, this time increasing into every 4th stitch. When you are done, you should have increased 6 stitches and should now have 30 stitches on your needle. Work in reverse stockinette (purl one row, knit one row, etc.) until you have about 4 1/2 inches, ending after a knit row. Join the black, then work in standard stockinette, knitting one row, purling one row, etc. for 6 rows, stopping after you've finished a purl row. Join the pink, knit two rows, then work in reverse stockinette again, purling, the knitting, purling, knitting for 4.5 inches after the two rows, stopping after a knit row. Join the black again, work in standard stockinette again for six rows, then stop after a purl row. Join the purple, then knit two rows. Work in reverse stockinette again for 4.5 more inches, then stop after a purl row. Now, follow the directions to shape the head.
Row 1: Knit 3, then decrease one by knitting two together, and repeat the pattern to the end of the row. You should now have 24 stitches on your needle.
Row 2: Purl to the end of the row.
Row 3: Decrease by knitting two stitches together, and repeat to the end of the row. You should now have 12 stitches on your needle.
Row 4: Purl to the end of the row.
Row 5: Decrease one, by knitting two stitches together, and repeat to the end of the row. Now you will have 6 stitches on your needle.
Row 6: Purl to the end. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail twice as long as the caterpillar. Thread the tail through the yarn needle, and slide the stitches on the knitting needle onto the yarn needle.Pull it tight, then sew the seam on the back shut, with the smooth side facing out. Leave an opening at the head big enough so that your fist can fit through. Turn the caterpillar inside out, and then stuff it. Sew the opening closed, then tie off and cut the tail. Using a regular needle, you can sew on button eyes. The project will take about 35 yards of yarn per color.
