Animal Bath Puppets

These cute bath puppets can be used as normal puppets, too, as well as in the bath. You can add ears, tails, and other accessories to make them looks like other animals, but the owl and the pussycat are different shapes. You can use families to add the feature; for example, a tiger is part of the cat family, so you could knit the cat design in stripes. A bluebird is a bird, like the owl, so you could knit the owl design in blue, and add a beak with yellow if you wanted to by knitting two triangles and sewing them together, then onto the puppet. You would do this by decreasing. For one puppet, you will need about 60 yards of any color yarn. You should also use either size 8 or 10 needles. To make the pussycat: Cast on 42 stitches and work in garter stitch until the piece measures 4 inches. In the next row, knit the first 28. Thread a yarn needle ith a color different from the one you're using, and slide the remaining stitches onto the yarn. Slide the yarn needle off of the yarn, then tie a knot loosely so that you can untie it later. Keep knitting (in garter stitch) the 28 stitches until this part measures about 7 1/2 to 8 inches long. Bind off. Then, untie the scrap yarn that holds the other 14 stitches. Slide these off of the yarn and onto a knitting needle. Knit these 14 stitches in garter stitch until this part measures about 6 or 6 1/2 inches. This forms the thumb. Bind off all 14 stitches. Now, after cutting the yarn, fold the thumb in half so that the outer edge meets the inner edge of the thumb. Thread a yarn needle, cut the thread, and sew where the edges meet, including over the top. Make sure that you don't sew where your thumb is supposed to go through. Next, fold the other part down to touch the top of the thumb section. Sew it there, but don't sew where your fingers are supposed to go. Sew to connect the thumb to the rest of the glove. Then, turn the puppet inside out. The inside is now the outside! Weave in all loose thread ends, and sew on button eyes, embroider a mouth, and add ears (see Ears in Optionals). IT will take about 60 yards of yarn for 1 puppet.
